Ask father to marry his daughter

Asking a father for his daughter's hand in marriage (6 tips)

Weddings are full of traditions, such as which finger to wear a wedding ring on. According to another tradition, a man should ask his father-in-law-to-be for his daughter's hand. Does this still happen? And how does it work?

Asking someone's hand as permission to marry

In the past, the groom had to ask his father in law for his daughter's hand in marriage. This was done out of respect for the bride's father. This is because most fathers are very protective. They first want to know everything about the groom's future plans. What does his work situation look like? Does he have a home? And what about children?

Times change. Today, men do not ask for permission, but rather for their blessing or congratulations. In addition, the future mother-in-law is also usually involved.

Ask a dad to marry his daughter: 6 tips

  1. Make sure you look groomed (clothes, shoes, hairstyle...).
  2. Bring a personal present. This will immediately set the right mood.
  3. Be in a place where you are both comfortable, preferably without too many bystanders.
  4. Are you easily nervous? Prepare what you are going to say.
  5. Find the right moment to ask for his daughter's hand. You need to feel this moment a little.
  6. Avoid sensitive points during the conversation.

So now what?

Has your future father-in-law given his blessing?  Then you need an engagement ring for the proposal. Luckily, you'll find the most beautiful engagement rings in our collection!
